The Oblivion Games

The final blow strikes me.

The roaring crowd falls silent as I collapse.

The game editor calls the match, crowning the victor with a laurel wreath.

He beckons me to the urn. It alone will decide whether I am worthy of death or oblivion.

As I place my hand on its smooth surface, the Colosseum fades.

Mercury guides me into the urn.

An endless gray sky hangs above an arena of battle-worn warriors trapped inside.

He says, “There is no freedom, honor, or glory here. Only one warrior leaves.”

Defeated warriors eternally fight for the prize most desired.

True death.
